I do miss the restaurant that used to sit at the corner of 18th and 8th, which was of course named 18th and 8th. I have memories of hanging out there on sunny days with various friends, some with us, some no longer around. Sitting at the corner restaurant gave you a good view of the goings on in Chelsea at that time. Now the restaurants have increased in number, and the small 8th avenue hub of Chelsea seems to have spread way beyond 8th avenue. I have seen 7th avenue turn into a busy street covered in hip places over the last few years, and it appears that 9th isn't far behind.
On the corner of 18th and 8th will be a new building that has caused quite a stir. Various weblogs have reported the demise of the old structure for what appears to be a dull looking new building with little character. Curbed and towleroad have both spoken about this blemish to the face of Chelsea. It appears that the developers will be putting in a new bank on the first floor. Because what Chelsea needs is a bank. And after that we need a nail salon too! In fact, how about a bank and a nail salon in one. I would hate to have to walk more than 10 feet to get to the next bank or nail salon in this neighborhood. Here are some pictures of the current mess that is located on that corner thanks to the construction. Don't forget to check out NYC Stories Gear at http://www.cafepress.com/nycstories
