Yesterday started on a high note. The film I worked on last weekend (writing, acting in, and editing with a team from Proletariat Films) made the first cut in the competition. We are in the top 12 out of over 40 films and will be screened at the Best of the NYC Midnight Run on Sunday. Information and how to get tickets can be found at http://www.nycmidnight.com/.
Then, after work I went with my friend Rob to watch him eat at Righteous Urban BBQ on 23rd at 7th Ave. He was running errands such as trying on his wedding ring (next Sunday is the big day!) and finished early. I had already eaten, so it was just water for me. Rob enjoyed a giant pulled pork sandwich and some yummy cooked greens. The pork had a great smokey flavor.
After eating we headed to Times Square to see Spamalot. We arrived early so we checked out the gift cart set up outside. Twenty-five dollars for a small stuffed killer rabbit and ten dollars for a special edition tin of Spam.
Then we spotted Corbin Bernsen standing around outside waiting for the doors to open like the rest of us. I noticed he didn't purchase the killer rabbit either.
Inside the show was a lot of fun. I was tempted to get the miniature catapult set including the flying vache and the Trojan bunny. But I refrained.
The show was silly and fun. Ladies I don't recommend it for you. The three women who went with us did not like the show. It is really for old school Monty Python geeks.
I can say though that I thought the three leads were a bit under utilized. Tim Curry sounds great. David Hyde Pierce is quite funny. Hank Azaria seems like he is not having as much fun as he should with this part. I think that cuts to the heart of the problem. Monty Python always seemed like they were having a great time while doing these parts, and these guys are not really enjoying themselves like they should be. I think turning it into a quick change show and forcing them to work harder and faster might be better for the show. As an director of mine used to say, "LOUDER, FASTER, FUNNIER!"
Sara Ramirez really does shine in the part. I think she realizes how lucky she is to be in this show with such a line up of stars and she is enjoying herself. Christopher Siber does a nice job in his parts also, though he does not shine like Sara.
If you are a Monty Python fan from way back, if you can quote lines from the movie, if a moose once bit your sister, then silly walk, don't crawl to get your ticket!
I saw the matinee show of Spamalot on May 18 and thought the cast looked
like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves, which made the experience
even better for me. I came to see Tim Curry perform live and surprisingly
found myself having fun watching the entire show. I had brushed up on
Python's Holy Grail the weekend before so the jokes in the play would make
better sense. I wouldn't scare off the women, maybe just the women who
don't appreciate silly, low-brow humor.
