Cruise around Manhattan

posted Friday, 17 June 2005

A great way to see Manhattan is to take a cruise around the city.  I have taken several over the years I have lived here.  They are all wonderful experiences if the weather is nice.  I wouldn't bother during bad weather or during cold weather.

The Circle Line is fun, but the full trip all the way around the island is a bit long.  I would only take the 1/2 trip.  There is nothing to do one the boat except watch Manhattan go by.  This is fun at first, but eventually wears thin.

The NY Spirit Cruises are also an option.  I have done this twice as part of a work function.  The first time, when we pulled away from the dock, they had a countdown and celebration like a regular cruise would, throwing streamers, etc.  The only problem was everyone was inside sitting at tables and it was really lame.  The food was not that good, and then the entertainment was a number of abused actors singing and dancing and serving food.  I felt bad for them.  It was pretty stupid.  We escaped and hid outside.  The second trip was also for my company, but we had rented the whole boat.  We had dinner and a DJ but no entertainment.  This experience was much better.

Finally, I have also taken the Sea Tea.  This is a sailing tea dance that heads out on Sunday evening, circling the lower part of Manhattan.  Dinner is served, and their is loud music and dancing.  It can be a lot of fun.  If you want you can hang out outside, chat, and watch Manhattan light up as the sun sets.

No matter what cruise you take, I recommend one that leaves while the sun is up, and returns after it sets.  The sunset is beautiful, and the lights of the city are quite a view once the sun is gone.
