Higher Ground, Nickel Creek, and the House of Lemay

posted Wednesday, 5 October 2005

Higher Ground is a hot performance venue in South Burlington, VT that books national bands, sizzling local acts, and great comedy. Check out their upcoming shows.

Last weekend, I was in Vermont and I spent Saturday evening at Higher Ground. Nickel Creek was playing in the ballroom, but I was there for something a lot more fun and unusual. The House of Lemay. I have known the performers in the House of Lemay for many years, and I have even acted with some of them at times. I have seen many of their shows, and this was by far their best performance ever.

The founders of the House of Lemay are the talented Amber and Marguerite, the Sisters Lemay.

Amber is the writer of the group...

...while Marguerite is the costume wizard behind the show.

The two have been performing together for at least a few years, and each passing year only seems to improve their work. In addition to the sisters, the House of Lemay includes Lucy Belle, the award winning southern dame who likes to sing and dance. Just don't tell her she has an accent.

Finally, there is Liza Little, a scene stealing natural at crazy comedy. Liza's trademark teeth and screeching voice only add to the fun.

Try and stop her from doing her "interplertive dance," and hope that in her next show she again helps the band, The Decoys, as they perform their signature "Chicken Plucking" song.

The show was a huge hit with the audience, and the country numbers left the crowd in stitches. The girls managed to take care of their "itchy, twitchy spots" and the show was able to go on.

Between performances, I managed to sneak backstage to check up on the girls. I caught Lucy Belle hard at work in the mirror, and her big hair left little room for poor Liza Little to touch up her makeup.

If you get to Burlington, be sure and check out Higher Ground. If you are really lucky, The House of Lemay will be performing while you are there.
