The Plaza Hotel

posted Tuesday, 21 June 2005

Today a friend of mine from Baltimore asked if I could get her towels and a robe from the plaza hotel. Trying to be a good friend, I headed up to the Plaza and entered this building I had never been in before. What I saw shocked me. Extreme grandeur much faded by the closing of this hotel. I felt as if I was rummaging through the remains of a fallen civilization. Strewn about were shades of what had once been a great society. Clothing, bedding, broken furniture. Nothing seemed to have escaped the ravages of time and use. And yet, shining through the dirt were glimmers of gold. Dig long enough, you might yet find a gem. Here a gold rimmed glass yet unbroken, there a jacket from the Oak Room. A bit of imagination and the ballroom would come back to life, if for only a moment. This was an experience I shall not soon forget.
