Last night I went with my friends to Xunta Tapas bar in the east village. This is a restaurant that is meant for parties of happy people and not for romantic dates.
While we had a great time in this dark, moody bar, the experience was far from perfect. We had a large party of around twelve people, and the waitress was great. Unfortunately, the management didn't have enough people working, and she was the only waitress in the entire restaurant. While she managed to hold it together and did a great job, the service was, of course, a little slow. And I will note that it was not as slow as I expected. This woman was working hard. I blame the managment of this place for this part of the experience.
Also, I was there with one friend who has spent much time in Spain, and really like tapas. He was less than happy with the food. I found it to be a bit uninspired, a little short on flavor, and the portions were small for the price. I will give mention to the dates wraped in bacon that were smokey and delicious. The Sangria tasted ok and was served in large pitchers, but it was some of the weakest Sangria I have ever had. We went through many pitchers of the stuff, and barely felt and effects.
Xunta has a great atmosphere as a bar/hangout type place. Picnic tables for larger parties and barrels with high stools around them for smaller parties. The people were friendly and happy. They have been around since 1995 and must be doing something right. However, after more than 10 years, they should know when to have a full staff on duty for a busy night.
